Copyright © Chandigarh Cactus Garden in Panchkula My close friend, Dr. J.S. Sarkariya was the founder of the Cactus Garden at Panchkula, Haryana. He was the man who overcame all the odds to make this dream come true. It was because of him that cactus and succulent plants became popular in north India; let me say India. He deserves a mention in the garden area itself as he gave a unique landmark to Chandigarh. Dr. Sarkariya requested me to photograph the garden in the year 1993 when the garden was at its peak. Now, I hear that the garden has lost its glory !!! I visited the garden on Feb. 10, 2011. I was happy to note that the garden has been named after Dr. Sarkariya as I had expressed earlier. The plants have grown bigger due to which the landscape has changed. Nothing new seems to have been added during these years except some Pchypodiums, Nolinas, Adeniums and other easy growing plants.
